Last week I photographed the birth story of Sadie in Lawrence, Kansas. If you haven’t had a chance to watch the slideshow video, you’ll want to check it out here: http://morganlangphotography.com/birth-story-video/. The photographs in the video are all family friendly and done modestly, so you don’t need to be concerned about watching it around your children or at work.
For this birth, mom and dad were expecting their first baby. They called me early evening to say that contractions were far apart. Although they were laboring at home, receiving this early phone call gave me plenty of time to get things in order before going to the hospital. By 10pm that evening, they had been admitted to the hospital and I made the decision shortly after that to go ahead and head to the hospital to wait until they were ready for me to start photographing.
Around 11:30pm, I started capturing images of labor. Mom was in a lot of pain and had requested an epidural. The anesthesiologist had no problem having pictures taken during that time, so I kept photographing the story. Not long after Mom was feeling much better and I had the privilege of capturing many beautiful images as her husband and mom supported her. One of my favorite images is of him talking to her close to her ear, telling her encouraging words. Words that they had forgotten, but I was able to remind them of later. How awesome it was to be able to not only document their story, but to also be able to help them remember some of the details that are easily lost during the intensity of labor and delivery!
After a full night of labor, things were getting closer just before the sun came up. As Mom pushed and Dad supported her, I captured those final pushes from an angle that preserved Mom’s modesty, yet allowed her expression to be photographed as she held baby close to her for the first time.
Every birth is amazing to me because it’s a reminder of love and the preciousness of life. It’s an awesome experience every time and indeed a privilege to be able to be there with the families and help preserve priceless images as they experience one of the most awesome days of their lives.
As lovely as the pictures are, the birth story video is rich and emotive as well, full of details and moments that the parents may have missed or forgotten later on. The images, video, and music are carefully chosen to tell Sadie’s birth story in a way that she and her parents will treasure forever. If you would like to see her birth story, you can find it here.
