A week before Gio’s mom was due, I received a call that she was at the Birth Center at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Active labor hadn’t started yet, but I visited them at the hospital to see how things were going and capture some memories.
By evening, Mom was only in early labor, so I went home to sleep for a while. As every night that I’m on-call, I slept with my phone nearby in case I’m needed in the middle of the night.
A few hours later I awoke to a text that Mom was now dilated to 5 and had an epidural. I asked if they’d like me to come right then, but they said to wait until 4:30 or 5:00 AM, which was still a couple hours away. After setting the phone down, I began to get ready to leave.
30 minutes later I was on the highway and was almost to the hospital when I received another text- Mom was now dilated to 10! This was her first baby, so no one was expecting it to go that fast. I told them I would be there in 5 minutes- I have no doubt that it was God’s leading on my heart to leave when I did!
Shortly after 4:30 AM, Gio was born!
It was love at first site for Mom, Dad, and Baby Gio too. He went right to nursing and couldn’t take his eyes off his mama.
I photographed Gio as he was weighed, bathed by Dad, snuggled in his parents arms, and even as his grandparents sneaked a peak at him for the first time.
By the time Gio was having his first bath, the sun was starting to come up. It’s a strange feeling knowing that almost everyone you know has been sleeping while something so incredible and amazing has been happening!
