Last month we welcomed our new baby boy, Nathanael. He’s our 6th. child and our reversal baby– a gift from God as we are now parents of a newborn again. That was one of the reasons we named him Nathanael, which means, “God has given”.
On the day of Nathanael’s birth, I was nervous because it was my 6th. c-section and worried about the risks that could go with having that many cesareans. I shouldn’t have worried though because the surgery went really well.
My doctor had arranged to have a clear drape for the surgery and it was AWESOME!!! If you’re having a scheduled c-section, I highly recommend having the full clear drape. I watched my baby take his first breaths. So incredible! I even videotaped his birth through the clear drape using my cell phone while on the operating table!
For the first time out of any of the 6 c-sections, I was able to hold my baby skin-to-skin in the O.R. I had wanted to have skin-to-skin in the O.R. with my 5th. and back then (5 1/2 years ago), it wasn’t something that was being offered. To have that chance this time was wonderful. My baby was happy on my chest and I was distracted from being stitched up by snuggling with my baby boy.
The c-section surgery itself was very fast (2 minutes from first cut to birth) and before long I was out in recovery with my husband and baby. Other than a rough time with getting the epidural going, it was a great birth experience.
Abby from Grassroots Photography created a beautiful birth video for us. She was with us at the hospital as our birth photographer- photographing before the c-section, during the operation (filming through the window outside the O.R.) and later in the afternoon when our older children came to meet their baby brother for the first time. Abby even used some of the video I captured while on the operating table (when Nathanael was born) in the birth story. More pictures to come later!
This month I photographed the unmedicated birth of Charlie in the Kansas City Area. A year and a half I photographed their son Gio’s birth and this past December I also did video for his first birthday party. It was a lot of fun to capture Charlie’s birth and see their family again as they experienced one of the most important days of their lives!
Charlie’s birth was a VERY fast birth- so quickly that he came out without any pushing at all! We were all thankful they made it to the hospital in time vs. having the baby in the car and I was happy to have arrived ahead of them at SMMC to capture Charlie’s birth day story starting from the moment Mom came out of their car.

Today I’m sharing two parts to a birth story in Overland Park- the video I created for the family, and the birth story from Mom’s own words. Her story is one of patience and faith as she waited over 10 years for a child, even helping take care of her niece and nephews with so much love as her own. Hopefully her story will bring encouragement to others who are waiting.
From Mom’s words (shared with permission):
“We waited for 10 years and there came a point where we thought it will just be the two of us till the end. Baby Zach came as a surprise because that was the first time that we never really tried or thought of having a baby. We conceived him June 2014. We knew of Baby Zach’s gender as early as 15 weeks via blood sample. I had to undergo all tests to make sure that Baby is healthy and normal.
Had one of the test came out bad, it would still be the same, I would still have Baby Zach as is. But God made sure we will have a perfectly healthy and happy Baby. That’s why we call him our miracle baby.
I’ve always loved children, actually both August and I. And being a mother is falling in love over and over again for the very first time. That’s what I am feeling each day I wake up and seeing this little one beside me. Giving birth is a beautiful thing, now I can finally say it. I never expected it to be this easy.
I’ve always thought that giving birth is like going through fire because of pain, but my experience was totally beautiful and amazing. God is just so good to us. We waited, and it’s all worth it.
Also, August and I had the best experience because of you Morgan. You were there capturing every moment nobody could ever do for us. And because of that, we have a lifetime of memories of Baby Zach’s birth that we can look at and go back to starting today till we grow old. This will be our gift to Baby Zach. That’s why we call you our angel. God sent you to us.”
Earlier this month I left my house in the middle of the night and headed towards Kansas City to photograph a home birth. Within 3 hours, the little guy made his arrival peacefully and was greeted with tears of joy and many smiles from his family!
If you’re expecting a baby, whether delivering at home or in a hospital, and would like to see a peaceful and happy birth video, this is one you’ll want to watch!

*The midwives at the birth were Amber Walla and Beth Oster. You can find out more about their home birthing services at Sacred Song Homebirth.
As a birth photographer I love to do provide a complete story for families through birth story slideshows. I use still images, video clips, and music, all pieced together that bring out the beauty of Baby’s birth day.
Tender moments of Dad and Mom during labor- supporting each other as they prepare for their lives to be changed forever, Baby’s first cries only moments after birth as Dad cuts the cord, Dad rocking and soothing his new baby girl in his arms… these are all moments captured through video.
Take a few minutes to watch this beautiful birth story.

There is something magical about witnessing a couple become parents for the first time. The excitement and anticipation as they know their lives are about to drastically change forever, and then the joy as they meet this little person that they already love so much- it always touches my heart. After spending more than 26 hours with us during labor, I almost feel as is if my wife and I have known Morgan forever… even though we only met her a few months ago! She was so much more than a photographer. She helped comfort my wife and I, gave us helpful advice, and even stepped in to drive us to another hospital when things got bad during labor. All of this while taking AMAZING pictures. If you need a photographer, pick Morgan! ~Michael

Mom labored at New Birth Company, a birth center in Overland Park, and had planned to deliver there, however it became necessary to transfer. One of the midwives from New Birth Company came to SMMC to deliver Baby and helped Mom to have a wonderful and peaceful birth even in a hospital setting! I have all great things to say about the midwives and care at New Birth Company- they take good care of their families!
There is more to a birth than the delivery itself, and those are the details I work hard to capture. From still images of Dad finding a heart shaped leaf as he holds his wife during labor outside, Mom and Dad laughing during pushing, the transition from “I’m going to be a daddy” t-shirt to crossing it out to “I am a daddy”, first cries, and so much more… It’s all there, the precious moments that sometimes are unnoticed, but are in their pictures and video for the family to cherish forever.
