It was late Mother’s Day evening when I went to the New Birth Company in Overland Park, KS to photograph a birth.
This was the family’s first baby and they were very excited! I stayed outside their room most of the time, as things were going slowly, and Dad would peak back there to grab a snack and have the biggest smile on his face! He even came prepared with a glow-in-the-dark shirt that said, “I’m going to be a daddy!”.
Hours passed and it was the middle of the night. I tried to nap a little on a small loveseat that was outside of the birthing room.
Night changed to morning and Mom had progressed only a little and she was very tired.
The couple tried laboring a while outside to see if a change in scenery would help. In one of the pictures below you’ll see a leaf Dad found for Mom- shaped like a heart.
Hours continued to pass when Mom and her birthing team decided it would be good for her to transfer to Shawnee Mission Medical Center, so we gathered up their things and headed over to the hospital.
At SMMC, Mom’s midwife from NBC came to support her and deliver Baby. After an epidural and some rest, Mom was smiling and ready to push!
Before long Baby was born- delivered by her own Daddy!
There’s always something magical about photographing first time parents.
To have those first moments- the support and love of a couple during labor and delivery, first breaths and seeing the images of when you first fell in love with this tiny little person who changes your life forever… it’s priceless!
